Notes for all sailings

  • For all locations see the Sailability Locations Map.
  • All sailings begin and end at Langstone Sailing Club. “Leave and Return” times and other durations given here and on the locations map are approximate.
  • Postcodes below usually give nearest habitation only, so please use a roadmap as well as your Google search.
  • Clothing: wear items you don’t mind getting saltwater on, it can leave irremovable marks.
  • Fine weather: to help against sun – bring a hat (with chin string), sunblock and liquids (not alcohol)
  • Windy days: to help against spray etc – bring light waterproof jacket and trousers, plus hat and extra jumper (it’s often cooler on the water).
  • The club has buoyancy aids and waterproofs that members may use.
  • See ‘A’ below for list of boats used generally. Trips beyond our usual Langstone base sailing area can only include the flat-bottomed powered boat “Hillary Farrow” and the sailing boat “Joyce”. Taking more boats, including the multi-hulled craft, would require additional volunteers and support vessels that we just don’t have.

A – Langstone Harbour – local sail – 2 to 4 hours (PO9 1RD)

Our usual sailing area. With enough volunteers available, a variety of boats from small to medium, and some single-person vessels go out. You can be close to the water in the Wayfarer or tri-maran, or higher up in the more sedate ‘Joyce’, or more contained aboard the motor craft ‘Hillary Farrow’.

Leave/Return:  Out and back on one tide.

Bring:  Liquids and perhaps a snack. Otherwise, food and drink can sometimes be bought at the club bar and galley.

Disability specific:  Slipway is moderately steep, but help is available.
Crew-served hoist from wheelchair to vessel and fully trained assistance.
Secure parking close-by at clubhouse.
Wheelchair accessible toilets with hoist and changing bed.
Wheelchair lift to the club room.

B – East Head – whole day – min 8 hours (54045' 17.1" N -- 0054' 35.9" W)

Sailing to The Witterings (near Chichester). Lovely wide beach, relaxing, swimming, sunbathing on the dunes. Barbeque or picnic. Sometimes a game of rounders.

Leave/Return:  Morning tide – evening tide

Bring:  Liquids and food for the day.

Disability specific:  No toilets, but there are many sandunes.
No other facilities.
No road access.

C - Priory Bay (nr Seaview - Isle of Wight) - whole day - min 8 hours

Sailing across the Solent to the Island. Lovely wide beach, relaxing, swimming, sunbathing on the dunes. Sometimes a game of rounders. Barbeque or picnic.

Leave/Return:  Morning tide - evening tide

Bring:  Liquids and food for the day.

Disability specific:  Sandy ground with some pebbles.
No toilets at location (there is woodland, but most of it is steep).
Nearest public loos, ¾ mile walk.
No other facilities.
No road access.

D - Cobnor Camp - min 2 days (PO18 8TE)

Sailing there and back to Cobnor (near Bosham) with overnight camping. By the sea and in the country. Sunrises and sunsets, little woods and open fields. A friendly natter, sometimes a singsong with guitar. A pub within a mile and a half. Either bring your own barbeque or pay for group barbeque.

Leave/Return:  Erecting tents Friday night is optional, or leave on lunchtime tide Saturday - return lunchtime Sunday.

Bring:  Tent, carry-mat or airbed, sleep-gear, liquids, food for the weekend, etc.

Disability specific:  Toilets ¼ mile from campsite, across some uneven ground.
The beach coming in is pebbly at low tide and the slipway quite steep, but help is usually available.
The distance to the camp is about ¼ mile, but you must speak to volunteers if you require transport to or from the slipway and campsite - so it can be arranged in advance.
There is road access for carers and other support.
